As a local businessman, John is acutely aware of the impact business
rates have on small businesses in our towns and rural and coastal communities.
Small Businesses
John has carried out research, which shows that for small businesses
with turnover of less than £50K, business rates represent, on
average, over 35% of operating profit. He is calling for a fairer system
for business rates, with help targeted specifically at relieving the
disproportionate burden, which falls on small businesses.
Business Regeneration
Cornwall's future economic development depends on business regeneration.
John has highlighted the key role of Objective One funding and has also
identified a new role for business rates in aiding the process of regeneration.
He is pressing the Government to fund innovative schemes such as rate-free
periods for business start-ups
John has also calling for rate relief for businesses located in special
Business Improvement Zones, to be identified in our urban and rural
areas, where unemployment and other pressures, such as poor infrastructure
and lack of affordable housing, have led to businesses struggling to
survive.
