JOHN
WELLER'S CONCERN FOR OUR CORNISH ENVIRONMENT
John is the Chairman of CAIR ( Cornwall Against Incineration at Roche
) - the organisation set up by local people concerned at the plans by
Cornwall County Council to build a huge waste incinerator at Roche,
to serve the whole of the County.
John has always had an interest in our natural environment and in our
Cornish countryside. Both are threatened by this development, although
John acknowledges that we have to find an urgent solution to the problem
of waste disposal by landfill.
He sees the incinerator as old technology and has called for the proposal
to be dropped whilst new and innovative methods are studied to find
a solution that is acceptable to our community.
The planned incinerator has a 240 foot chimney, which would carry poisonous
waste residues over Mid, and North Cornwall, in particular, because
of the prevailing winds.
John and his fellow campaigners in CAIR are shown below at a recent
public meeting called to raise public awareness of the proposals. The
meeting was packed out with concerned Cornish residents who called for
a complete re-think.
" Only an ostrich with its head in
the sand would vote for this scheme," said John.
